1. The Brain
Weighing around 3 pounds, the brain contains about 100 billion neurons, which are neural pathways that “talk” to each other through chemical neurotransmitters. These “conversations” are crucial in everything we do. Touch a hot stove with your hand? Your brain immediately shouts to that hand to retract immediately. Got a fever? Your brain signals for an army of cells to fight the foreign invaders. As you can see, your brain is command central. However, a common misconception about the brain is that it naturally loses brain cells as we age. Studies have shown that with proper nutrition, this might not be a necessity.
2. The Heart
Your heart is more than just an organ that pumps blood throughout the body. It’s also our body’s energizer. In fact, our heart creates enough energy to drive a truck 20 miles daily. In our lifetime, that’s a trip to the moon and back. So keeping our heart healthy as we age is an important factor to feeling youthful and vibrant.
3. The Lungs
You might be curious as to how nutrition can play a part in your lung’s health. Yes, the lungs control our breathing, but it does so by taking in oxygen that we breathe in, while removing carbon dioxide from our bodies while we breathe out. The amount of carbon dioxide in our body is dependent upon our diets, and carbon dioxide is a significant factor in shortness of breath.
4. The Kidneys
Many people have heard about kidneys, but are not familiar with its exact functions. They are our body’s impurity dispenser, sifting through 200 quarts of blood a day to excrete waste products and extra water. There is more blood here than even in the brain, liver, or heart. Nutrition is important to keep our kidneys working at their optimal levels.
5. The Liver
How important is your liver? For one, you cannot live without it. The liver performs 500 different functions in our body. Without our liver, those fats from that cheeseburger you ate last week will still be in your body today. So yes, the health of our liver is crucial.
6. The Pancreas
Do you know where the pancreas is located in your body? If you don’t, you’re not alone. It’s often an overlooked member of the six vital organs, but without our pancreas, digestion would not occur.
